German Vlogger Praises India's World-Class Metro System: "Better Than..." https://ift.tt/q53CQzb A German vlogger has gone viral on social media after he praised India's metro system, stating it was better than some of the transit routes in Western Europe. Alex Welder took to Instagram to share the video with his over 70,000 followers where he expressed surprise at the efficiency, cleanliness and modern infrastructure of the metro systems in cities such as Delhi and Agra, highlighting how they had exceeded his expectations. Mr Welder admitted that prior to coming to India, he had his fair share of preconceived notions which included stumbling upon a dilapidated transport system with shabby buses and noisy tuk-tuks. "Before coming to India, the stereotypes about public transport in the country were demolished or old buses and trains and noisy tuk-tuks and rickshaws," Mr Welder captioned the post. "I didn't know that some cities in India like Agra and Delhi actually have a very decent metro system. Delhi even has platform screen doors on some of its lines, plugs to charge your phone and designated seats for women and elderly," he added. Mr Welder revealed that he stayed in South Delhi and managed to get a seat in the metro for the majority of the time. "As long as I didn't ride the metros at rush hour and stayed away from the city center and tourist hotspots." Mr Welder pointed out that Delhi's metro has features similar to those in countries like South Korea, Japan, and China. "Delhi even has platform screen doors on some of its lines, plugs to charge your phone, and designated seats for women and the elderly. These are all things I've seen in South Korea, Japan, and China but honestly did not expect to find in India," he noted. Woman Sues Over Rs 16.6 Crore 'Versace' Flat Missing A Bathtub https://ift.tt/bVyHeG2 An accountant who bought a Rs 16.6 crore (1.5 million pounds) Versace-designed flat in London, has sued the developers after discovering the bathroom had no bath. The woman claims she was promised "ultimate luxury" for an apartment in the building dubbed the "Versace Tower", following a high-profile collaboration between developers and the fashion house to design the interiors. According to a report in The Telegraph, Mi Suk Park paid a Rs 4.2 crore (381,000 pounds) deposit for a two-bed apartment and a parking space in the 50-storey Aykon London One tower in Nine Elms. She decided to buy the property to be her and her husband's "main home until retirement". She even sold her previous home in 2019 for the flat that was meant to be ready to move into in 2020. However, when the flat was finally handed over after a two-year delay in 2022 and Ms Park saw it, she complained to the Central Lonon County Court that one bedroom was smaller than expected and one of the two bathrooms did not have a bathtub. She has sued for more than Rs 7.7 crore (700,000 pounds), complaining that the flat was “materially and manifestly different from the layout of the apartment as set out in the plan and description” that she had seen before paying the deposit. "The apartment was an 'off plan' purchase on the 29th floor facing the west and, when built, it would have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, with a bathtub in each critically," said Ms Park's attorney Nazar Mohammad. "It was to be an open-plan layout. The defendant provided a plan appended to the sales and purchase agreement, and she signed the same plan," he added. "Ms Park refused to complete and, instead, purported to rescind the contract by letter dated 14 October 2022. Subsequently, the defendant served notice to complete on 22 November 2022 and, following the claimant's failure to complete, a notice of termination on January 9, 2023. Ms Park issued these proceedings on 21 April 2023. The case is still underway. https://ift.tt/mhIvfF4 March 28, 2025 at 07:14AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Italian Teacher At Catholic School Caught Moonlighting On OnlyFans, Suspended https://ift.tt/LrbQJCt A teacher at a Catholic school for children in Italy has been suspended after she was caught moonlighting as an OnlyFans model. One of the parents recognised Elena Maraga, 29, selling her content on the adult website and informed other parents through a WhatsApp group chat and Facebook, according to a report in The Telegraph. After receiving the complaint, the school administration took action with Ms Maraga pushing back. She argued that what she did in her free time did not harm anyone else, adding that her salary of around 1,200 euros (Rs 1.1 lakh) a month was "unsustainable". "That's why I had already considered other careers. I know friends who earn very well. I simply thought that I'm proud of the physical results I've achieved and I like to show them off," she told Italian media. Notably, Ms Maraga has a degree in Educational Sciences and has five years of experience working in a Catholic nursery school. "I love teaching children, it's my calling. But I earn much more on the Internet. I opened OnlyFans a month ago, partly for fun, partly out of curiosity, partly to see if you could really earn money. In one day I get a month's salary," she added. Amid the controversy, Italy's education ministry is preparing to chalk up a new code of ethics prohibiting teachers from appearing on adult websites. The code is likely to direct teachers to "avoid statements, images or behaviour that could damage the prestige and reputation" of their schools. Nepali Student's Annual Day Speech Goes Viral, Internet Reacts https://ift.tt/nZrf62D A Nepali student's fiery speech during his school's annual programme has gone viral on social media. The student, identified as Abiskar Raut was addressing the gathering at the school's 24th annual programme where he delivered a rousing monologue that voiced concerns about the Himalayan nation's political and economic challenges. "Today, I stand here with a dream of building a new Nepal. The fire of hope and passion burns within me, but my heart is heavy because this dream seems to be slipping away," Raut said, after introducing himself as the head boy of Holy Bell School. "I put myself before you at this moment to shed light within your consciousness by piercing the dark nimbus that looms above. I am present here today to immortalise monumental change and the course of history." Speaking of Nepal as a nurturing mother, he questioned whether the citizens were giving back to the country what was rightfully owed. "Nepal, our mother, the country that gave us birth and nurtured us-what did it ask for in return? Just our honesty, our hard work, our contribution. But what are we doing?" Raut asked. "We are bound by the chains of unemployment...trapped in the selfish games of political parties. Corruption has woven a web that is extinguishing the light of our future," he added. 10-Year-Old British Boy Breaks World Record For Memorising Pi Digits https://ift.tt/E6enpP8 A 10-year-old British boy has broken the world record for recalling the most decimal places of pi in one minute. Alberto Davila Aragon, a student from Bristol, set the new record by memorising and reciting 280 digits of pi in just 60 seconds. Aragon's journey with the mathematical constant began in March 2024 when his school organised a pi digits competition with an unusual prize-pieing the headmaster in the face. "In March 2024, my school organised an exciting Pi digits competition with an amazing prize: the chance to pie our headmaster in the face! Determined to win, I went home and committed myself to memorising as many digits of Pi as I could," Alberto Davila Aragon told Guinness World Records. "I emerged as the winner of the competition, having memorised an impressive 150 digits of Pi. The moment finally arrived when I got to pie our headmaster [...]!" "It was an exhilarating experience, and I'm grateful to our headmaster for creating such a fun and inspiring challenge that motivated me to test my memory skills." According to Guinness World Records, this was only the start of Alberto's record-breaking journey. Motivated by his initial success, he continued to push himself, learning even more of Pi's digits and improving his speed, until he was ready to challenge the world record. When that moment arrived, his parents helped him organise the event. They got in touch with Bristol University in search of a mathematician, with local sports clubs in search of experienced timekeepers and a professional witness. "Then, we wanted an iconic location for this record, one that was significant to me," Alberto explained. "From the [Clifton] observatory, the view of the iconic suspension bridge is amazing - I cross that bridge every day on my journey to school. "I love school, and I'm also a great student - just a bit chatty, according to my teachers!" After winning the contest by recalling 150 digits, Aragon continued practising, ultimately shattering the world record. Pi Day, celebrated annually on March 14, is a nod to the first three digits of pi-3.14. https://ift.tt/Dk31uHK March 15, 2025 at 09:23AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Billionaire Says She Stood In Queue For Hours To Land Job At Her Own Company https://ift.tt/X7qLowu Lynsi Snyder, heiress to In-N-Out, a popular fast-food restaurant chain in the US has revealed that she stood in a line for hours to land a job at her own company. Ms Snyder, who became the president of In-N-Out Burger at the age of 27, said she was just 17 years old when she started working at the restaurant to show she hadn't been handed any opportunities simply because of her surname. According to a report in Fortune, Ms Snyder queued up for two hours outside a new In-N-Out restaurant in Redding, California to land a summer job at the chain. "I think that there's a stigma that can come with being the owner's kid. I just wanted to be respected like others, doing it the right way and not having the special treatment," Ms Snyder said. Ms Snyder revealed that her first job at the burger chain involved doing minor jobs like chopping vegetables and serving customers. In fact, she previously said that no one knew her real identity except the manager of the store. This ensured she was not treated differently from other employees. Thai Man Discovers Venomous Snake Frozen Inside Ice Cream https://ift.tt/lQxV9Cf A Thai man has gone viral after he found a whole snake frozen inside an ice cream bar he bought from a street cart. Rayban Naklengboon, hailing from Pak Tho in the Mueang Ratchaburi region of central Thailand, shared pictures of the spooky discovery on Facebook, much to the shock of users. "Such big eyes! Is it dead yet? Black bean, street vendor, real picture because I bought it myself," Mr Naklengboon wrote in Thai. Black bean is a kind of ice cream in Thailand that is widely consumed. However, in Mr Naklengboon's case, a black-and-yellow snake's head could be clearly seen in the picture he posted. Social media users speculated that the creature might be a mildly venomous golden tree snake (Chrysopelea ornata) that is commonly found in the region. The post garnered thousands of reactions and comments with some reacting in horror while others joking. "This is why I don't usually buy food from street carts. This is horrific," said one user while another added: "Well, you're getting some extra protein with the ice cream." A third commented: "The first bite gets you hooked, the next puts you in a hospital bed." Notably, a golden tree snake typically grows to around 70-130 cm but the one found in the ice cream was likely a youngling, 20-40 cm long. Here's Why We Observe Women's Day On March 8 https://ift.tt/t9RHJKI The United Nations officially designated March 8th as International Women's Day in 1977, following their initial observance in 1975, though the day's origins predate these dates. The United Nations states that the first National Women's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909. The Socialist Party of America designated the day to honour the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested poor working conditions. According to the International Women's Day (IWD) website, around 15,000 women marched for shorter working hours, better wages, and voting rights. Also Read| International Women's Day 2025: Government Women Empowerment Schemes In India For years, the last Sunday of February was marked as Women's Day. However, these events weren't isolated; they were part of what is now recognized as the First Wave of Feminism. Some critics argue that focusing solely on the American movement overshadows similar feminist efforts in the Soviet Union and other Communist countries. Early Feminism in the US and Europe The 1908 New York protest was one of many milestones in the fight for women's rights. The First Wave of Feminism (mid-19th century to the 1920s) saw campaigns for voting rights, equal pay, and gender equality across the West. As early as 1848, activists Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott organized the first women's rights convention in New York after being denied a voice at an anti-slavery convention. Mott was a prominent abolitionist, while Stanton became a leading feminist. In her 1892 speech, The Solitude of Self, she argued that women deserved equal rights for their independence and survival: "No matter how much women prefer to lean, to be protected and supported, nor how much men desire to have them do so, they must make the voyage of life alone... If not equal to the occasion, alike they perish." The Birth of International Women's Day In 1910, the Second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. German socialist Clara Zetkin, leader of the Women's Office in the Social Democratic Party, proposed an International Women's Day- a global celebration dedicated to women's demands for equal rights. The idea was accepted with over 100 women from 17 countries attending the conference. In 1911, over one million people attended IWD rallies across Europe, demanding rights to work, vote, be trained, hold public office, and end discrimination. Zetkin, known for her revolutionary activism, believed workers' movements were key to securing women's rights. The Manchester Guardian later described her as the "grandmother of communism". Why March 8? The date of March 8 has its roots in Russian history. On February 23, 1913, Russian women protested against World War I under the Julian calendar (which corresponded to March 8 in the Gregorian calendar used elsewhere). This became a global benchmark for Women's Day rallies. Another protest occurred on February 23, 1917, when Russian women demanded an end to war, food shortages, and the rule of Czar Nicholas II. Historian Rochelle Ruthchild explained that male revolutionaries like Leon Trotsky were initially frustrated by these "disobedient women" for organizing protests before the planned May Day (Workers' Day) demonstrations. However, these protests helped spark the Russian Revolution. Within days, the Czar was overthrown, a communist state was formed, and women won the right to vote in Russia. White women in the United States gained suffrage in 1920, while women of colour only secured voting rights after the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Women's History Month and Modern Recognition In 2011, the Barack Obama administration declared March as Women's History Month, commemorating 100 years of International Women's Day. "International Women's Day is a chance to pay tribute to ordinary women throughout the world and is rooted in women's centuries-old struggle to participate in society on an equal footing with men. While enormous progress has been made, there is still work to be done before women achieve true parity." - President Barack Obama From its roots in labour protests to becoming a global celebration of women's achievements, International Women's Day continues to highlight the ongoing fight for gender equality, empowerment, and social justice worldwide. https://ift.tt/TcywV9m March 05, 2025 at 08:08AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Holi is not just about colours- it's also a feast for the taste buds! Traditional delicacies like gujiyas, sweet dumplings filled with khoya, and thandai, a refreshing milk-based drink infused with nuts and spices, are an essential part of the celebrations.

With its rich cultural significance and joyful traditions, Holi remains one of the most cherished festivals, spreading happiness and unity wherever it is celebrated.

Boss Lashes Out After Employee Refuses Weekend Work: "Make Me Quit" https://ift.tt/wEClh9V Employees worldwide struggle with the challenge of weekend work and manage to set boundaries, while others face pressure to extend their hours. A Delhi-based video editor recently experienced this firsthand and took to Reddit to share screenshots of their boss's unexpected and frustrated reaction to their refusal to work on weekends. Having joined a marketing company in December with the expectation of a relaxed work culture-an impression formed through its social media presence- the employee shared the exchange to highlight the stark contrast between the company's image and reality. "Reality soon changed with massive amounts of changes and weak briefs," he said. He added that he edited a video in 55 minutes and left the office at 7:30 pm, which is the office time. He said he got some changes that needed to be made to the video at around 8:30 pm. "Need it for posting tomorrow afternoon, please get it down," the boss was seen saying in a screenshot of a WhatsApp Group conversation the video editor shared. "I won't be able to take this up as I don't work on weekends. I can share the project file. Let me know if that works," the Reddit user replied. The boss asked the video editor to send an email "saying exactly this" before asking him to see him on Monday. "What kind of a f*****g response is this?" the boss said after the editor agreed to see him on Monday. The Reddit user said he has been clear about not working on weekends, to which his boss replied saying, "Wow. Simply wow." The post soon went viral across social media platforms.  A user wrote, "Ofcourse how can you not work on weekends? You are a robot who needs to work 24*7." Another user commented, "Been there, startup companies CEO usually behave like this. I wish i could expose him and his team for behaving unprofessional and rude. left within 3 months. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER." "I am glad that person took a stand for themselves. More power to whoever you are mate," the third user wrote.  https://ift.tt/VtGwiUy March 02, 2025 at 08:29AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com
