Indian Woman Achieves Guinness World Record For Longest Hair https://ift.tt/hLY2sjH Smita Srivastava, a 46-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, India, recently secured a Guinness World Records title for having the longest hair on a living person. She has abstained from cutting her hair since the age of 14, and her remarkable tresses were officially measured at an impressive length of 7 feet and 9 inches. Inspired by the iconic long hairstyles donned by Hindi actresses in the 1980s, Ms Srivastava's dedication to maintaining her lengthy locks has now earned her a place in the record books. "In Indian culture, goddesses traditionally had very long hair. In our society, it is considered inauspicious to cut hair, so that is why women used to grow hair," Smita explained. "Long hair enhances the beauty of women." According to Guinness World Records, Smita usually washes her hair twice per week. The entire process, including washing, drying, detangling, and styling, takes up to three hours each time. She spends 30-45 minutes washing it, then dries it with a towel before using her hands to detangle it, which typically takes two hours to do. "I lay a sheet down on which I detangle my hair while standing on my bed," Smita said. Once her hair is detangled and fully dried, she combs it before braiding it or tying it into a bun. Smita reveals that whenever she ventures outdoors with her hair flowing freely, onlookers are left "amazed." She notes that people find it difficult to fathom the existence of such lengthy hair, expressing disbelief at the extraordinary length she has maintained over the years. "People come to me, touch my hair, take pictures, and take selfies with me, and they often inquire about the products I use, as my hair is beautiful. "I tell them what I apply to my hair, and they express their intention to do the same to achieve healthy hair." Smita is overjoyed to now hold this Guinness World Records title, which she says she used to dream about. "God answered my prayers," she told GWR. https://ift.tt/2TpuEsN November 29, 2023 at 11:45PM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Black Friday 2023: Little Known Facts About The Annual Sales Day https://ift.tt/cKoTlFg Black Friday marks the start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States and several stores offer significant discounts and promotions on this day. It is considered one of the busiest shopping days of the year in the country. Every year, Black Friday falls a day after the festival of Thanksgiving, the traditional US holiday where people express gratitude over a delicious meal with traditional delicacies like roast turkey apart from other dishes. This year, Black Friday is being observed today.  The term "Black Friday" originally referred to the day when retailers would shift from being in the red (operating at a loss) to being in the black (making a profit). However, over time, the day evolved into a major shopping event characterized by large crowds, long store hours, and extensive promotions both in physical stores and online.  But the annual retail event is still arguably shrouded in little mystery. So, here are a few little-known facts about the day:  Origin of Black Friday  According to Fox News, the first time the term "Black Friday" was used on a national level came in September 1869. But, it wasn't in reference to holiday shopping. Citing Encylopedia Britannica, the outlet reported that the term was used to describe American Wall Street financiers Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, who bought up a significant portion of the nation's gold to drive up the price.  The pair weren't able to re-sell the gold at the inflated profit margins they planned for and their business venture was unveiled on September 24, 1869. "The scheme ultimately came to light on that Friday in September, throwing the stock market into rapid decline and bankrupting everybody from Wall Street millionaires to poor citizens," said Lyle David Solomon, a bankruptcy attorney at Oak View Law Group. Another tale refers to a time back in the early 1960s when Philadelphia police officers used the phrase "Black Friday" to describe the chaos that ensued from suburban visitors coming to the city for holiday shopping. The huge crowds that swarmed the city created headaches for the Philadelphia police who were compelled to work longer shifts to deal with traffic accidents and shoplifting. Within a few years, the phrase "Black Friday" was being used in the local community despite retailers trying to positively twist the name by referring to it as "Big Friday". It wasn't until the late 1980s, that merchants started to spread the red-to-black story for Black Friday, according to Britannica. Black Friday in other countries  The United States is not the only country that celebrates Black Friday. Citing a digital analytics and SEO marketing firm, Fox News reported that more than 10 countries observe the annual holiday shopping event. The countries that observe Black Friday include Canada, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Black Friday sale For more than 60 years, Black Friday has been one of the busiest days for retail stores and holiday shoppers. But in recent times, the event has gotten larger with early or extended Black Friday sales. Retail stores have followed up Black Friday sales with Cyber Monday and Cyber Week events where shoppers can make holiday purchases exclusively online. https://ift.tt/rV0awAs November 24, 2023 at 09:34AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Another added, "Legend duo is back."

"I wanted to make a reservation, the five star cuisine i just witnessed seems too tempting," said a person.

Tesla Cracks Down On Cybertruck Resales With $50,000 Penalty In US https://ift.tt/ji5K36W Amidst the excitement surrounding the release of Tesla's Cybertruck on November 30th, potential buyers with the intention of reselling should exercise caution. Tesla has introduced a substantial penalty for customers attempting to resell their newly purchased Cybertruck within the initial year of ownership, as outlined in a newly added section of the vehicle's order agreement. "You agree that you will not sell or otherwise attempt to sell the vehicle within the first year following your vehicle's delivery date," the company wrote in the legally binding document. Tesla also threatens legal action against resellers, seeking injunctive relief of at least $50,000. Elon Musk's electric vehicle maker asks anyone who wants to dump their Cybertruck to sell it back to Tesla or receive written consent from the company before selling it to a third party. Tesla will be making three models of the Cybertruck, a vehicle that can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in less than three seconds. The basic model will cost $39,900 (roughly Rs. 32,03,700) and offer a 250-mile range between charges; the top-line truck will have twice that range and sell for $69,900 (roughly Rs. 57,41,900). https://ift.tt/Z7IVsSP November 14, 2023 at 11:49PM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Children's Day: Why Jawaharlal Nehru's Birthday Celebrated As Bal Diwas? https://ift.tt/Sn6OKre Children's Day or 'Bal Diwas' is celebrated annually on November 14 in India. The day is celebrated to appreciate and acknowledge children as they are the future of the county. This date also marks the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of the nation Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who was adorably referred to as 'Chacha Nehru' by children.  Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on 14 November 1889 in Allahabad, India. He was a great advocate for children's rights and for an all-inclusive education system where knowledge is accessible to all. He considered every child as the future of the country and appreciated them to the fullest. "Children are like buds in a garden and should be carefully and lovingly nurtured, as they are the future of the nation and the citizens of tomorrow," Nehru said in one of his famous speeches.  Why is Children's Day celebrated on Jawaharlal Nehru's birthday?  Previously, Children's Day was celebrated in India on November 20 -  the day 'World Children's Day' is celebrated globally by the United Nations. However, after the death of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in the year 1964, the parliament issued a resolution to establish his birthday as the official Children's Day in the country. Since then, India celebrates Children's Day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the first Prime Minister of India. The day is also known as Bal Diwas in the country. During Jawaharlal Nehru's tenure, several educational institutions of national importance- Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) were set up. He was often called by the name "Chacha Nehru".  Children's Day Celebration To commemorate this day, children are showered with a lot of love, gifts and pampering. Schools across the country organise special events and programs for the children who are also showered with gifts that consist of eatables, books and cards. They also conduct games, debates, seminars, dance, music, essay, speech and painting competitions.  Children's Day is a day to sow the seeds of virtue in the future leaders of the nation https://ift.tt/KolRq1v November 14, 2023 at 08:07AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Fried Rice Syndrome Trends On Social Media. Here's Everything About It https://ift.tt/GbpCIUq Dietitians and food experts caution against leaving foods, particularly dry items like pasta and rice, unattended at room-temperature due to the risk of "fried rice syndrome," a form of food poisoning caused by the bacteria Bacillus cereus. This organism can proliferate in food left unrefrigerated for extended periods. The resurgence of discussions surrounding fried rice syndrome on social media is prompted by the renewed attention to a 2008 case involving the tragic death of a 20-year-old Belgian student. The incident was attributed to a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus and has once again surfaced on the internet. According to a case report published by the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, the student consumed reheated spaghetti that had been left unrefrigerated for five days. Despite warming the food in the microwave before consumption, he succumbed overnight to symptoms including headaches, nausea, and abdominal pain. Although it's been nearly 15 years since the incident occurred, recent social media posts have brought "fried rice syndrome" back into the internet's consciousness. What is 'fried rice syndrome'? According to The Conversation, Bacillus cereus are common bacteria found all over the environment. They begin to cause problems if they get into certain foods that are cooked and not refrigerated promptly. Starchy foods like rice and pasta are often the culprits, but Bacillus cereus can also affect other cooked foods, like vegetables and meat. Certain bacteria can produce toxins that grow when food is left at room temperature. Bacillus cereus produce spores that are resistant to heating, so even if leftovers are heated to a high temperature, the spores may survive. These spores can then produce toxins that make us sick. What are the symptoms? Bacillus cereus is a bacteria that can cause food poisoning. There are two types of Bacillus cereus infections: one that causes diarrhea and one that causes vomiting. Symptoms usually resolve within a few days, but people with weakened immune systems may need medical attention. Because the symptoms are similar to those of other gastrointestinal illnesses, it is difficult to know how often Bacillus cereus occurs. What measures can people take to safeguard themselves? To prevent food poisoning, first of all, try not to eat leftover food. If that is not possible, then minimize the time they spend in the danger zone (above fridge temperature and below 60°C). Refrigerate leftovers promptly after cooking, and break large batches into smaller portions to help the food cool quickly. Dietitians and food experts caution against leaving foods, particularly dry items like pasta and rice, unattended at room-temperature due to the risk of "fried rice syndrome," a form of food poisoning caused by the bacteria Bacillus cereus.

Avoid taking leftovers out of the fridge repeatedly.

"Monster" 17-Foot Burmese Python Captured In Florida. See Pics https://ift.tt/QkbEI8c A giant Burmese python was recently found by captors in Florida, United States. The enormous reptile, weighing close to 90 kilograms, was discovered by conservationist Mike Elfenbein and his son Cole, 17, while the two were hunting for pythons at Big Cypress National Preserve on Friday. Once they spotted the monstrous snake, fellow hunters Trey Barber, Carter Gavlock and Holden Hunter also joined the two to catch it, as per CBS News.  "Officially 17'2" & 198 Pounds. This snake ate a lot of native wildlife to get this big. She ate her last meal! It took five of us to control her, glad to have removed her from our Everglades where she can no longer eat our wildlife," Mr Elfenbein wrote while sharing a series of images of the snake on Instagram.  Take a look below:  View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mike Elfenbein (@mike_2lf) Speaking to CBS News, Mr Elfenbein described the snake as a "monster" following the discovery. "It was more than a snake," he said.  According to Mr Elfenbein, Mr Gavlock was the first to grab the snake by the tail. Then his 17-year-old son Cole and Mr Gavlock grabbed the head, and all five men tried to wrestle the python to the ground. Mr Elfenbein said the python quickly went from "flight to fight" and was a "formidable opponent".  The five men then sat on the python's back and wrestled with it for more than 45 minutes. The python, on the other hand, kept lifting its body off the ground "trying to constrict" its captors and continue to move the group out of the way. The python had "zero fear" of her captors, Mr Elfenbein told the outlet.  Also Read | A Waitress' Life Turned Into A Nightmare After $10 Million Lottery Win. Google Doodle Celebrates Hamida Banu, India's First Woman Wrestler https://ift.tt/KOXLQAN Today, Google is celebrating India's first professional woman wrestler Hamida Banu. The doodle, illustrated by Bangalore-based artist Divya Negi, depicts Ms Banu surrounded by local flora and fauna. It also serves as a reminder of a female's entry into a sport that was dominated by males in the 1940s and 50s. "This Doodle celebrates Indian wrestler Hamida Banu, who is widely considered to be India's first professional woman wrestler," the Google Doodle description read.  Why is Google honouring Hamida Banu today?  Hamida Banu, widely considered to be India's first woman wrestler, was born in the early 1900s near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. In her career spanning the 1940s and 1950s, Ms Banu won more than 300 competitions.  May 4 was chosen as the date to honour Ms Banu because it was on this day in 1954 that she challenged and defeated famed wrestler Baba Pahalwan. He retired from professional wrestling after that. "On this day in 1954, the wrestling match that earned Banu international recognition and acclaim was reported - she had defeated famed wrestler Baba Pahalwan, in just 1 minute and 34 seconds, after which the latter retired from professional wrestling," Google wrote in the description of the doodle.  About Hamida Banu  Hamida Banu was born into a family of wrestlers in the early 1900s near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. She entered into wrestling at a time when women's participation in athletics was strongly discouraged by prevalent social norms. However, Ms Banu was "passionate and she competed with men anyway, issuing an open challenge to all male wrestlers and wagering her hand in marriage to the first to defeat her," as per Google.  Ms Banu's career even extended into the international arena, where she won against a Russian woman wrestler Vera Chistilin in less than two minutes. "Her name appeared in newspaper headlines for years, and she became known as the "Amazon of Aligarh." The bouts she won, her diet, and her training regimen were widely covered," Google wrote.  Also Read | What Is 'Star Wars' Day? Why Is It Celebrated On May 4? Here's Everything To Know "Hamida Banu was a trailblazer of her time, and her fearlessness is remembered throughout India and across the world. Outside of her sporting accomplishments, she will always be celebrated for staying true to herself," it added.  Speaking about today's doodle, artist Divya Negi said she was inspired by Hamida Banu's fight against conservative norms of the day. "I delved into Hamida's world during my doodle research. It was inspiring to learn that she fought fiercely against the conservative norms of her time. Going against groupthink is one of the hardest things one can do, and being a woman adds another level of complexity to it. Despite that, Hamida powered through and won," she said. https://ift.tt/m51kach May 04, 2024 at 09:34AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com
