Google Doodle Celebrates Hamida Banu, India's First Woman Wrestler https://ift.tt/KOXLQAN Today, Google is celebrating India's first professional woman wrestler Hamida Banu. The doodle, illustrated by Bangalore-based artist Divya Negi, depicts Ms Banu surrounded by local flora and fauna. It also serves as a reminder of a female's entry into a sport that was dominated by males in the 1940s and 50s. "This Doodle celebrates Indian wrestler Hamida Banu, who is widely considered to be India's first professional woman wrestler," the Google Doodle description read.  Why is Google honouring Hamida Banu today?  Hamida Banu, widely considered to be India's first woman wrestler, was born in the early 1900s near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. In her career spanning the 1940s and 1950s, Ms Banu won more than 300 competitions.  May 4 was chosen as the date to honour Ms Banu because it was on this day in 1954 that she challenged and defeated famed wrestler Baba Pahalwan. He retired from professional wrestling after that. "On this day in 1954, the wrestling match that earned Banu international recognition and acclaim was reported - she had defeated famed wrestler Baba Pahalwan, in just 1 minute and 34 seconds, after which the latter retired from professional wrestling," Google wrote in the description of the doodle.  About Hamida Banu  Hamida Banu was born into a family of wrestlers in the early 1900s near Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. "Her name appeared in newspaper headlines for years, and she became known as the "Amazon of Aligarh." The bouts she won, her diet, and her training regimen were widely covered," Google wrote.  Also Read | What Is 'Star Wars' Day? Why Is It Celebrated On May 4? "May The Fourth Be You": Here's Why 'Star Wars' Day Is Celebrated On May 4 https://ift.tt/OxvldTB Every year on May 4, die-hard 'Star Wars' fans celebrate Star Wars Day. For those unaware, 'May the Fourth be with you' was picked as the date as a pun on the popular slogan from the movie "May the Force be with you". This day is dedicated to the celebration of the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas in 1977. On this day, fans wish each other by saying "May the Fourth be with you," instead of "May the Force be with you," like in the movies.  Notably, George Lucas' films have never officially recognised the day as a holiday, however, devoted fans and supporters of the successful franchise celebrate the day every year without fail. Fans in the US, Canada, UK, and several other nations gather on May 4 to celebrate Star Wars Day. So, as we celebrate Star Wars Day today, here's everything to know about the day.  Why is May 4 'Star Wars' Day? The inspiration behind choosing May 4 as the Star Wars Day is the popular line from the series, "May the force be with you". The line is often used by Jedi masters in the movie as a sentiment of goodwill. Fans realised the phrase sounds a lot like "May the 4th be with you". Therefore, the date on which "Star Wars" Day is celebrated every year is based solely off of a pun. When did 'Star Wars' Day start?  As per USA Today, one of the first instances of the phrase "May the Fourth be with you" was on May 4, 1979, when a London newspaper writer wished Margaret Thatcher, then new prime minister of Britain, luck on her first day in office. "May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie", the writer wished in a full-page advertisement. "Congratulations!" it further read. Officially, the day was celebrated in 2019 when California lawmakers voted to declare May 4 as Star Wars Day in honour of the opening of Disneyland's Galaxy's Edge. Interesting facts about 'Star Wars' Day While May 4 is associated with the Jedi phrase - May the force be with you, May 5 has come to be known as "Revenge of the Fifth" which is a play on Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. May 5 celebrates that Dark Side or the Sith lords in the Star Wars Universe. May is also a significant month for the popular franchise: the original Star Wars premiered on May 25, 1977, and its creator, George Lucas, was born on May 14. https://ift.tt/zE7bqri May 04, 2024 at 08:43AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

These stories cover everything from the city's diverse multicultural community to the difficulties faced when trying to rent a place to live. These unique experiences, not commonly found in other big cities, are known as "Bengaluru Moments" because they are special and happen a lot in the city. In a heartwarming encounter, Bengaluru resident Namrata S Rao recently shared a touching exchange she had with an auto driver. The driver, upon discovering Rao's ability to converse in Kannada, initiated a conversation about his daughter's education. Rao affectionately dubbed the encounter a "cute Bengaluru moment." The interaction unfolded when Rao casually inquired about the weather in Kannada, catching the driver off guard with her language proficiency. This led to a discussion wherein the driver sought advice on the array of entrance exams available for his daughter, who is currently in Class 11. "Cute #Bengaluru moment. While I started asking, 'Tumba seke alla?', he replied, 'Oh kannada baratta' to then discuss CET, NEET, and other entrance exams that his daughter could attempt, who is now in Class 11. X User's Post On Juniors Messaging For "Minor Issues" Sparks Discussion https://ift.tt/uIzPwa6 A software engineer has sparked a discussion online after expressing his frustration over his juniors at work frequently reaching out to him with minor or trivial issues. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the user, Vinay, described how he felt when his juniors or even mid-level engineers at work message him for trivial things that can be solved in minutes. He said that such a behaviour signifies "low growth potential and a lack of self-awareness". He also added that junior colleagues or his mentees need to understand that constant interruptions can affect workflow and reduce productivity. "I'm disappointed when my mentees constantly message me with minor issues. This behavior signifies low growth potential and a lack of self-awareness. It's surprising that junior and even mid-level engineers expect me to drop everything to respond to their Slack messages, despite the brief time it takes to resolve their concerns. Man Battling Cancer Wins $1.3 Billion In US Powerball Jackpot https://ift.tt/JTlj6aD Cheng Saephan, a 46-year-old immigrant from Laos battling cancer, has defied the odds by winning a staggering $1.3 billion on the Powerball lottery. Officials confirmed Mr Saephan purchased the winning ticket for the April 7th draw in Portland, Oregon. Choosing to prioritise financial security, Mr Saephan opted for the lump sum payout of $422 million after taxes, which he plans to share equally with his wife and a close friend. This win marks a life-altering turn of fortune for Saephan and his loved ones. "Now I can bless my family and hire a good doctor for myself," Mr Saephan told BBC. "My life has been changed," Mr Saephan added, revealing that he had prayed to God for help. Mr Saephan further added that he plans to use the money to buy his dream family house and would continue playing Powerball.  "I might get lucky again," he said.  Mr Saephan has been undergoing chemotherapy for the past 8 years- said that he, his wife and a friend have teamed up to buy more than 20 Powerball tickets for the 7 April draw. The winning numbers were 22, 27, 44, 52, 69, and the red Powerball 9. BBC reported it was the fourth-largest jackpot in the Powerball's history, with the biggest so far being $2.04bn in 2022. Powerball tickets remain an affordable gamble at just $2 each. You can find them in 45 US states, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. The game has undergone some adjustments recently, most notably an increase in ticket price. This change, along with tweaks to the number selection process, has contributed to the rise of billion-dollar jackpots. Previously, players picked five numbers from 1 to 59 and a Powerball from 1 to 35. Now, the selection pool for the first five numbers has expanded to 1 to 69, while the Powerball range remains 1 to 26. This seemingly minor shift has significantly impacted the odds of winning the grand prize, making it less likely (1 in 292.2 million compared to 1 in 175.2 million). In short, the new system creates a bigger prize pool but lowers your chances of winning it all. https://ift.tt/WPBD18j May 01, 2024 at 12:22PM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Origin of International Labour Day

The origins of International Labour Day can be traced back to the late 19th-century labour movement in the United States. The specific date of May 1st was chosen to commemorate a nationwide strike for an eight-hour workday that commenced on that day in 1886. This pivotal event, however, culminated in the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, a regrettable incident where a labour protest escalated into violence. A bomb explosion resulted in the loss of life for seven police officers and at least four civilians.

One pivotal event in the history of Labour Day is the Haymarket Affair, which occurred in Chicago in 1886. On May 1st of that year, workers gathered in Haymarket Square to peacefully demonstrate for an eight-hour workday. However, the protest turned violent when a bomb was detonated, leading to casualties among both police officers and protesters.

Facts About International Labour Day

  1. Despite International Labour Day tracing its origin to the commemoration of the Haymarket affair in Chicago, Labour Day in Canada and the USA is celebrated on the first Monday in September and not May 1.
  2. May Day is celebrated in more than 80 countries.
  3. In India, the first May Day was celebrated in Chennai (then Madras) in 1923 by The Labour Kisan Party Of Hindustan.
  4. Both Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day are also celebrated on May 1.
  5. Canada celebrated Labour Day in 1872, 10 years before the United States.

Restaurant Makes You Sign "Loss Of Life" Waiver To Take Hot Wing Challenge https://ift.tt/83QkwOC Wing Kingz, a restaurant located in Canterbury, Kent, UK, has introduced a new culinary challenge designed to test the limits of spice tolerance.  The aptly named "Earn Your Wingz" challenge requires participants to consume 15 chicken wings coated in a sauce featuring the Carolina Reaper pepper, known for its extreme heat. However, before embarking on this fiery feat, challengers must sign a waiver, a unique precaution implemented by the restaurant. This waiver acknowledges the potential for intense discomfort associated with the Carolina Reaper and protects both the restaurant and the participant. “I acknowledge that I will be engaging in the Earn Your Wingz Challenge, whereby there may be a risk of personal injury, illness or possible loss of life and damage to or loss of personal property,” according to the New York Post. Another point on the waiver reads: “I agree that I am participating in the Earn Your Wingz Challenge at my own risk, and I accept that Wing Kingz, its employees or affiliates will not be held responsible for any consequences that may result from my participation.” The challenge itself is a race against time and the body's ability to handle the intense heat.  Participants must finish all 15 wings within a strict 10-minute window, followed by a 5-minute "burn time" to assess their ability to withstand the lingering effects. The Carolina Reaper, a fiery red pepper developed by American breeder Ed Currie, boasts a scorching heat that can reach up to 2.2 million Scoville Heat Units (SHU). To put that into perspective, it's roughly 200 times hotter than your average jalapeno! This fearsome pepper held the coveted title of world's hottest pepper for an impressive period, reigning supreme from 2013 until just recently. However, its crown was snatched by another of Currie's creations, the even hotter Pepper X. For those who conquer the fiery challenge, the reward is twofold: a complimentary meal and a coveted spot on the restaurant's Hall of Fame wall. This unique challenge adds a touch of excitement to Wing Kingz' menu while offering a testament to the restaurant's commitment to pushing boundaries, albeit with a focus on responsible indulgence. The restaurant claims most would-be competitors don't finish the plate. Competitors are also made to wear black gloves to handle the wings and are strongly advised to keep their hands away from their eyes at all times.  https://ift.tt/mhDZv7E April 29, 2024 at 09:46AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Chinese Employees Reinvent 'Get Ready With Me' Trend With A "Gross" Twist https://ift.tt/xsarRmF Employees in China have jumped onto the “get ready with me” bandwagon, albeit for a completely different reason than usual. Instead of their best attire, creators are flaunting outrageously “gross” work outfits to register their protest against workplace norms. The Chinese youth are showing off their pyjama suits, slippers, and mismatched layers of clothing as they head to the office. They aim to poke fun at everything -- from challenging bosses and subpar work conditions to meagre pay and endless shift hours.  And they are not shying from sharing their creations online.  The trend came to light in late February when a post by a Douyin user went viral. She claimed she received criticism from her boss for her “gross” work attire, which she wore to combat the cold weather. In a follow-up video, which now has over 752,000 likes and more than 1.4 million reposts, the user proudly flaunted one of her infamous outfits.  She styled layer upon layer of mismatched clothing, including a fluffy white hat, a grey balaclava, red gloves, a puffer coat, a pink quilted jacket, a fleece sweater dress, plaid pyjama bottoms, fur-lined slippers, and knee-high socks. Now, Chinese creators are inviting others to join the fun, making it a trend about who can put together the most outrageous outfit, under hashtags like #grossoutfitforwork and #uglyclothesshouldbeforwork.  The hashtag #grossoutfitforwork has gotten over 140 million views on Chinese social media platforms Weibo and Douyin. https://ift.tt/WdaJ41i April 23, 2024 at 12:14PM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Rubber Duck Released In Ireland Found 644 Km Away After 18 Years https://ift.tt/2HWl4RK In a bizarre incident, a rubber duck that escaped a failed world record attempt nearly 18 years ago in Ireland has been found by a teenager 400 miles (644 km) away, New York Post said in a report. The duck was part of 150,000 yellow toys that were launched into the River Liffey in Dublin as part of the charity World Duck Race in June 2006. The race was meant to take the ducks one kilometre down the river and under five bridges. But several broke into the sea despite the organisers' best attempts. Now, so many years later, one duck has been found nearly 650 kilometres away on the island of Stronsay in the Orkney archipelago in Scotland. It was found by Filip Miller, 13, who was walking his dogs. He brought the toy home and his mother Marion noticed the writing on it. "The spring tides have been really high recently, and my son was walking the dogs along the shore. He was finding some bits and pieces and then he said, 'There's a rubber duck'," the woman told the Post. Photos posted by the teen show that despite the years at sea, the duck was still in relatively good condition, still having a bright orange beak, dark eyes and the race's information printed on its front. "I had a look at it and saw writing on it. That's when I saw it said, 'World Record Duck Race, Ireland 2006,' and so we got a bit excited and started Googling it," Marion further said. Each duck in the race was sponsored, with the first duck to pass under five bridges being declared the winner - the winning sponsor was awarded a trip to the US. Other ducks from the race have been found in Morecambe, England, and the Isle of Wight in the English Channel - with one even being spotted in Sweden. CBS News said the world record attempt failed, but succeeded at raising money for a local children's hospital. The latest world record for such a race was sealed in 2009 with 205,000 plastic ducks floating down the River Thames. https://ift.tt/GcgWHXj April 22, 2024 at 11:46AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

On Earth Day, Google Doodle Spotlights Climate Change https://ift.tt/Pui0ONU Celebrating Earth Day, Google used breathtaking aerial views to showcase Earth's natural wonders and rich biodiversity. This served as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding these treasures for those who come after us. As per the official website of Google Doodle, the letters of the search engine showcased some places across the globe where "people, communities, and governments work every day to help protect the planet's natural beauty, biodiversity and resources. These examples promise hope and optimism, but also remind us that there's much more to do to address the climate crisis and biodiversity loss." The six letters remind people to "practice sustainable habits year-round, and to continue the work needed to conserve water, electricity, and other resources," the website stated. The Google Doodle wasn't just a pretty picture! Each letter showcased a real-world conservation effort. The "G" highlighted the Turks and Caicos Islands, known for their biodiversity and ongoing efforts to protect natural resources and endangered species.  Moving on, the "O" featured Scorpion Reef National Park in Mexico, the largest reef in the southern Gulf of Mexico.  This UNESCO biosphere reserve safeguards complex coral reefs and shelters endangered birds and turtles. According to the website, the letter 'L' features the Great Green Wall in Nigeria, an "African Union-led initiative is restoring land affected by desertification across the width of Africa, planting trees and other vegetation while implementing sustainable land management practices." The last letter E shows the Pilbara Islands Nature Reserves in Australia, which, according to the website, is "one of 20 nature reserves in Australia that help protect fragile ecosystems, increasingly rare natural habitats, and several threatened or endangered species." This year, the theme of the Earth Day 2024  is "Planet vs. Plastics" which calls to "advocate for widespread awareness on the health risk of plastics, rapidly phase out all single use plastics, urgently push for a strong UN Treaty on Plastic Pollution, and demand an end to fast fashion," according to the official website of Earth Day. https://ift.tt/rX5eKwT April 22, 2024 at 08:31AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Microsoft's New AI App Makes Mona Lisa Sing, Internet Calls It ''Crazy'' https://ift.tt/uCgA0UV Microsoft recently introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI) model that can generate hyper-realistic videos of talking human faces. Dubbed VASA-1, the AI image-to-video model can transform still photos of people's faces into lively animations. The company says the created videos will have synchronised lip movements to match the audio as well as facial expressions and head movement to make it appear natural.  Recently, a video demonstrating the app's capabilities went viral on social media, leaving people amazed. The AI-generated video shows Mona Lisa, the iconic painting by Leonardo da Vinci, lip-syncing to Anne Hathaway's 'Paparazzi'. ''Microsoft just dropped VASA-1. This AI can make a single image sing and talk from audio reference expressively. Similar to EMO from Alibaba. 10 wild examples: 1. She entered into wrestling at a time when women's participation in athletics was strongly discouraged by prevalent social norms. However, Ms Banu was "passionate and she competed with men anyway, issuing an open challenge to all male wrestlers and wagering her hand in marriage to the first to defeat her," as per Google.  Ms Banu's career even extended into the international arena, where she won against a Russian woman wrestler Vera Chistilin in less than two minutes. Here's Everything To Know "Hamida Banu was a trailblazer of her time, and her fearlessness is remembered throughout India and across the world. Outside of her sporting accomplishments, she will always be celebrated for staying true to herself," it added.  Speaking about today's doodle, artist Divya Negi said she was inspired by Hamida Banu's fight against conservative norms of the day. "I delved into Hamida's world during my doodle research. It was inspiring to learn that she fought fiercely against the conservative norms of her time. Going against groupthink is one of the hardest things one can do, and being a woman adds another level of complexity to it. Despite that, Hamida powered through and won," she said. https://ift.tt/m51kach May 04, 2024 at 09:34AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com
