Nagaland Minister Shares Video Of Assam School That Takes Plastic As Fees https://ift.tt/zVXJOa3 From ocean depths to mountain peaks, humans have littered the planet with tiny shards of plastic. The world is producing twice as much plastic waste as two decades ago, and the bulk of it ends up in landfills. Only a small percentage of it gets successfully recycled. However, a school in Assam is showing the way forward with its unique method of plastic recycling. Temjen Imna Along, a politician from Nagaland, who is well-known for thought-provoking videos, shared a clip of Akshar Foundation, a school for underprivileged children that accepts only plastic as fee. Every week, the students have to bring 25 plastic bottles. ''If this doesn't surprise you, what does?'', Mr Along wrote while sharing the video.  Watch the video here: If this doesn't surprise you, what does?#Incredible_NorthEast Credit: northeastview_ pic.twitter.com/6RO1SqhaNa — Temjen Imna Along (@AlongImna) October 12, 2023 The school was co-founded by Parmita Sharma and Mazin Mukhtar in 2016 after they observed two burning issues- too much trash and illiteracy. To solve both problems, they built a school where children can study for free if they collect plastic bottles every week. The collective plastic is then used to make bricks, roads, and even toilets. At the school, the older students teach the younger ones for which they also earn money.  In addition to traditional subjects, students learn languages, plastic recycling, carpentry, gardening, and more. The school even has a 0% drop rate. “As we could never afford to recompense the kids like the quarries, we devised a mentorship peer-to-peer learning model, whereby older kids would tutor the younger ones, and in return get paid in toy currency notes that can be used to buy snacks, clothes, toys and shoes at local shops. As the students progress academically, their salaries increase. Our motto is ‘Learn more to earn more'. This monetary incentive has proved to be a powerful motivator for the community,” Mr Mukhtar once told The Guardian. People were impressed with the idea and lauded the couple for the groundbreaking initiative, paving the way for both education and sustainability. Reacting to the video, one user wrote, ''This is the most beautiful video from the Northeast. Our brothers are so talented. Great work dude.'' Another commented, ''Incredible India God bless them.'' https://ift.tt/7OTLJyd October 12, 2023 at 11:24PM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com

Man Sued For Selling Mask For Rs 36 Crore After Buying It For Rs 13,000 https://ift.tt/ZxenAuG An elderly couple took legal action against an art dealer after discovering that the mask they had sold to the dealer for Rs 13,000 was significantly more valuable. The art dealer subsequently auctioned the mask for a staggering Rs 36 crore. According to MailOnline, the unnamed couple in their eighties, from Nimes in France, were clearing out their home in 2021 when they decided to sell the 'Ngil' African mask. They sold it to an art dealer, known as Mr Z, for 129 pounds (Rs 13208), but he went on to sell the mask just a few months later for 3.6 million pounds (Rs 36,86,17320) at an auction in Montpellier. The elderly couple remained unaware of the substantial sale until they came across it in a newspaper, and as a result, they have initiated a lawsuit against Mr Z. Their claim is based on the belief that he deceived them and intentionally kept silent about the item's true value. According to The Metro News, the item is sourced from the Fang people of Gabon and is used during weddings and funerals. They're a rare sight outside of the African country, with only a handful found in museums around the world. Testing dated the mask to the 19th century, and court documents describe the item as 'exceptional in terms of its rarity'. The couple came into possession of the mask because the husband's grandfather was a colonial governor in Africa, according to industry media. The lawsuit is ongoing, but the court of appeals in Nimes ruled the couple's case 'appears to be well-founded in principle'. https://ift.tt/kA3dacQ October 12, 2023 at 09:42AM NDTV News-Offbeat https://www.ndtv.com
